Native Cambodian traditions blended with Indian traditions, producing a Khmer style which was unique, although it has to be said the latter heavily influenced art and architecture.
Statues and buildings were mainly wooden at this time and temples often had stone doorways. Stone was brought from the mountains of Chenla to the west. Sandstone carving on the [G 19 / lintels ]of the temples at Sambor Prei Kuk show a very high standard of [G 05 / bas-relief] carving and Indian religious iconography. Stone carving copied the techniques and designs of wood carving which was already well established and perfected by this time in Cambodia. Beautiful Buddhist and Hindu statues dating from the sixth to the eighth centuries were also discovered.
